UN Special Rapporteur: Repressions Continue In Belarus
Neil Muižnieks

Nils Muižnieks recalled Nikolai Statkevich.

The practice of political repression has not changed in Belarus, so one should not be overly optimistic. This was stated by the UN Special Rapporteur on our country Nils Muižnieks, commenting on the release of 123 prisoners, which took place on December 13.

"Many of those released, including politicians, human rights defenders, journalists, lawyers, trade unionists and civil activists, were convicted without a fair trial as punishment for their professional activities or for exercising civil and political rights. Recent releases have been accompanied by expulsion to other countries, while those who were allowed to stay in Belarus after their release have been placed under a strict surveillance regime and deprived of the opportunity to return to the qualified labor market," stressed the UN Special Rapporteur.

He reminded that in parallel with the release of political prisoners, Lukashenko's regime continues detentions and persecution on political grounds.

Muizhnieks noted that the state media portrayed the releases as a "pardon," but Belarusian opposition leader Nikolai Statkevich, who refused to leave the country, was detained and re-imprisoned. New criminal cases were started in absentia against some other recently released people.
