The Marshall Islands Introduced An Unconditional Basic Income For Citizens

First in the world.

The Marshall Islands became the first country in the world to introduce unconditional basic income (UBI) for all citizens. This was reported by the newspaper The Guardian.

In the framework of the program each resident of the republic will receive about $200 per quarter. Authorities expect the measure to help reduce poverty.

Citizens are given a choice of how to receive the funds: to a bank account in the form of a check or in cryptocurrency through a government-backed digital wallet. According to The Guardian, the first payments to Marshall Islanders were made in late November.

"We, the government, want to make sure that no one is left out," said Marshall Islands Finance Minister David Paul.

The program is funded by a special fund created under an agreement with the United States. Its activities are aimed at compensating the Marshall Islands for damage caused by decades of U.S. nuclear testing. The fund manages over $1.3 billion in assets, with the United States planning to allocate an additional $500 million through 2027.

The unconditional basic income is a form of social payment provided to citizens without any conditions. Its supporters believe that such a measure allows breaking the link between employment and income and helps reduce poverty.
