The Russia option will not work.
In the issue of territories as of today, a possible fair version is "we stand where we stand," Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said in response to a question from journalists, UNIAN reports.
He expressed the opinion that today "the possible fair version is that we stand where we stand, this is the contact line in any region of our state."
"That is, the Russians, as far as Donbass is concerned, will stand on the temporarily occupied part of our Donetsk and Lugansk regions. And we can return such territories only through diplomatic means, while we will stand and live in that part of Donbass, which is controlled by the Ukrainian government," the head of Ukraine noted.
Zelensky emphasized that it is important for us that the Ukrainian government controls that part of Donbass, which we control today.
"In my opinion, this is fair. Although, to be honest, the fact that the Russians are on our land is fundamentally unfair. But this is a compromise solution for today," the Ukrainian president said.
At the same time, Russia, he emphasized, demands that the Ukrainian army withdraw from the territory of the Donetsk region. "We have explained to our American colleagues that Ukraine cannot withdraw from our territories. I do not see the possibility and desire for such a thing. And I see that the Ukrainian people also do not have it," Zelensky emphasized.
U.S. proposal on the territory of Donbass
The President said that the Americans constantly want to find some kind of compromise, so they proposed a free economic zone. "I explained that it will not be that we come out and the Russian army stays. Because we don't believe that such a free economic zone will be safe. We are sure that the Russian army will want to enter our territory at any moment," the head of Ukraine said.
He stressed that "if you want to withdraw troops anywhere, the same mirror steps are always made".
"If we withdraw by 5 kilometers, so do they by 5 kilometers. We're 10 and they're 10. And then there is such a zone. It can be called a free economic zone or something else, if there are appropriate preferences. But we have to live up to this. The best thing, the honest option, is to stand where we stand. Less compromise and less dialog," Zelensky said.
The Ukrainian president added that if the issue of the free economic zone is raised, he told his partners that it would be up to the people of Ukraine to decide.
