Tentative until spring.
Russia and the United States held an ordinary round of talks to eliminate "irritants" in bilateral relations, but failed to make progress on major issues and postponed a new meeting for several months, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said. "The main issues are still hanging in the balance. And I think additional efforts will be needed: I don't rule out impulses at the political level to move forward," Ryabkov was quoted as saying by Interfax.
He said the next round of talks could take place tentatively in early spring. But "there are no specific dates," the diplomat emphasized. Before that, Moscow and Washington held two meetings on eliminating "mutual irritants." The last of them took place in Istanbul on April 10. The third meeting was not announced earlier and Ryabkov did not specify when and where it took place. The Russian Foreign Ministry noted that the consultations were canceled at the initiative of the U.S. side. At the same time, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that dialogue with the United States was underway, "but not as fast as we would like it to be."
Moscow has begun consultations with Washington on resuming full-fledged embassy operations, returning Russian diplomatic property to the United States, restoring air travel between the countries and generally normalizing relations in parallel with talks on ending the war in Ukraine, The Moscow Times.
The talks have so far come to nothing. The sides are discussing the U.S. peace plan, which originally consisted of 28 points but was reduced to 20 during Washington's dialog with Kiev.
The discussion of this option by the Russian president's special envoy Kirill Dmitriev and the U.S. president's special envoy Steve Whitkoff in Miami did not bring a breakthrough, the Kremlin said. Vladimir Putin is still demanding Kiev's surrender of Donbass and refusal to join NATO to end the fighting. Although the US has been pushing for territorial concessions from Ukraine, Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky rejected such an option, calling it unacceptable. He also requested security guarantees from the US to protect Ukraine from possible repeated Russian aggression.
