Ukraine stands its ground.
The issue of control over the Donbass territories, in particular the possibility of creating a free economic zone there, remains unresolved as part of the work to end the war, but the sides have made significant progress in discussing it.
U.S. President Donald Trump said this after talks with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky held in Florida on Sunday, New Voice.
Answering a question from reporters about the future of control over Donbass and the possible introduction of a free economic zone there, Trump said the sides have come closer to an understanding, although there is no final decision yet.
He said that it is a complex and sensitive issue, but there is progress in its elaboration. The US president expressed confidence that the issue will be resolved.
Trump also said that the problem of Ukrainian territories temporarily occupied by Russia remains among the key unresolved topics. At the same time, he suggested that the issue could be resolved within the next few months.
Trump said he was ready to come to Ukraine and address the parliament if it would help conclude a peace agreement.
"I'm not sure if it would really be necessary, but if it would help save 25,000 lives a month or however many, I would definitely be willing to do it," Trump said during a joint press conference with Vladimir Zelensky at Mar-a-Lago.
Zelensky said the territories question should be answered by the people of Ukriana, and a possible referendum could address each of the points in the peace plan. "Of course, our society must make a choice. <...> Because this is their land, this is the land of our people for many generations," he said.
Zelensky said the peace plan is agreed "on 90%, and the issues of Ukraine's security guarantees - on 100%.
"Europe will take on a big part" of ensuring Ukraine's security, Trump said. "But we will help Europe 100 percent. Just like they're helping us," he added.
