Lithuania May Declare A State Of Emergency Because Of Weather Probes From Belarus

The attacks haven't stopped.

Due to a prolonged influx of smuggled balloons disrupting Vilnius airport, the government plans to declare a state of emergency due to the threat to civil security. This was announced on Friday by an adviser to the prime minister, Ignas Algirdas Dobrovolskas, writes LRT.

"The government is preparing to declare a state of emergency due to a threat to civil security," he said.

When asked whether such a decision could be taken as early as Friday's Cabinet meeting, the adviser did not disclose details.

Because of the danger posed by balloons carrying contraband, operations at Vilnius airport have been suspended several times in recent months. The last time the airspace above the airport was closed was Wednesday evening, and a particularly intense attack by such balloons occurred last weekend.

In response to these incidents, the government decided in late October to close the border with Belarus for a month. However, the border was opened ahead of schedule to resolve the situation with carriers stuck in Belarus. However, the regime does not allow them to return to Lithuania, and the carriers are considering holding a protest action.

Faced, in the assessment of politicians, with a hybrid attack, Lithuania has repeatedly discussed the situation in various formats - both at meetings of the National Security Commission (NSK) and at the international level.
