Attempt To Count Number Of Belarusians In Country Made In Poland

Only last year, 38 thousand moved to the country.

Over the past five years, the number of Belarusians in Poland has increased by 287 thousand people, with at least 38 thousand settled in the neighbouring country last year. Krakow district deputy Mikołaj Kasej believes so on the basis of the study, writes Polskie Radio.

Mikołaj Kasej analysed the electronic registry of population records in Poland and found out that at least 38 thousand Belarusian names appeared there in 2024. The main conclusions of his study are as follows:

at the beginning of 2025, more than 348 thousand people with Belarusian names, both with and without Polish citizenship, were registered in Poland;

since 2024, the number of Belarusians in the state name register has increased by 12 per cent;

over the last five years, since 2020, the number of Belarusian migrants in Poland has increased by 280 thousand people.

The author of the study analysed information about the number of Belarusians in Poland based on anonymous data from the PESEL database - the state register of population records. Some of the names can be unambiguously defined as Belarusian - for example, Aliaksandr, Siarhei, Dzmitry. The owners of these names were immediately included in the list of Belarusians.

Such names as Ivan, Ruslan or Andrei could belong not only to Belarusians, but also to Ukrainians and Russians. In this case, the proportional system was used.

The total number of men with Belarusian names in Poland is estimated at 201 620 persons, women - 147 026 persons. Thus, the total number of Belarusians and Belarusian women in Poland can be estimated at 348.5 thousand people.

At the beginning of 2020, the number of Belarusians in Poland was 61.7 thousand. The biggest growth was noted in 2022, when more than 103 thousand Belarusians moved to the neighbouring country. Over the past five years, the number of Belarusians in Poland has increased by 287 thousand people.
