US President Donald Trump announced the imposition of duties of 25% on goods from Japan and South Korea. They will take effect on August 1.
The announcement was made in letters Trump sent to the leaders of Japan and South Korea, published in Truth Social.
- We must end the trade deficits caused by these countries' tariff and non-tariff barriers.... Therefore, we are imposing a 25 percent duty on any goods that come in," Trump said in the letters.
The U.S. president warned Japan and South Korea against retaliating, saying any action "will be met with a response from the United States.
- If for any reason you decide to raise your duties, any amount by which you raise them will be added to the 25% we charge," Trump emphasized.
The White House chief also noted that the 25% rates do not include any sectoral duties his administration has imposed or will separately impose on goods imported into key industries.
