A Rabbi's House Is Being Demolished In Bobruisk

One of the most beautiful wooden houses in town.

The demolition of the house at 57 Karl Libknekhta Street was reported by komkur.info.

The house was erected before the revolution on what was then Stolypinskaya Street. The neighboring building of the Zonal State Archive was built on the remains of the former synagogue, so it is most likely that this luxurious house next door belonged to the rabbi's family.

The sturdy house had a corner courtyard mezzanine, the origin of which is not quite clear - one can think of a sukkah, a makeshift tent, in which Orthodox Jews should eat meals, and in good weather and sleep during the celebration of the Feast of Tabernacles (Sukkot).

The house has survived to our time in extremely good condition, without rebuilding: the glazed veranda from the courtyard, the decor with carved tracery, platbands with finely executed crowns, double doors with shaped fillets and applied elements, a complex wrought iron canopy over the entrance - there is nothing like it in the city.

If we do not take into account the famous mansion of merchant Katsnelson, which was designed by a professional architect, then the house at 57 Karl Libknecht Street is the best example of residential wooden folk architecture in the city, and maybe even in the whole Mogilev region.

As noted by the Spadchyna telegram channel, the building was designated as a valuable wooden building on the historical and architectural reference plan of the city - part of the general plan of Bobruisk, which defines all valuable buildings.

Nevertheless, the building never received the official protection status, and before the demolition neither the local authorities nor the Museum of Local History bothered to remove and preserve part of the wooden decor and the canopy, as they do in Mogilev and Gomel, where the situation with the preservation of wooden architecture is also catastrophic.
