NYT: Trump Intends To Meet Putin In Person As Early As Next Week

He intends to hold a three-way meeting between the Russian dictator and Zelensky shortly thereafter.

U.S. President Donald Trump intends to meet Russian dictator Vladimir Putin in person as early as next week, and shortly thereafter he plans to hold a trilateral meeting: with Putin and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, two sources told New York Times, who are familiar with the American president's plans.

The sources said Trump revealed his plans during a phone call with European leaders on Wednesday. The meetings will take place without the participation of European counterparts. According to a NYT source familiar with the phone call, European leaders appeared to agree.

The newspaper said the conversation included British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedritz Merz, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Trump's special envoy Steve Whitkoff, among others. The latter met with Putin in Moscow on Aug. 6. Trump said the meeting made "great progress", which he told "some European allies" about.

The US president also spoke to Zelensky after Whitkoff's visit to Moscow. The latter said in his Telegram channel that European leaders also participated in the conversation. According to Zelensky, the position of Kiev and partners is the need to end the military conflict. "And it should be a fair ending," he noted.
