The state plays a key role in U.S. national defense, energy security and leadership.
The largest U.S. state of Alaska is ready to host a historic meeting between President Donald Trump and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin scheduled for August 15, Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy announced on Saturday, August 9.
He noted that Alaska is only two miles (about 3.3 km) from Russian territory, so it plays an important role for national defense, energy security and U.S. leadership in the Arctic.
"What happens in the Arctic and Pacific affects Alaska before the rest of the country. It is fitting that discussions of global significance will take place here," Dunleavy wrote on social media X.
He added that the world will be watching the historic meeting in this strategic location.
On the evening of August 8, Trump announced his upcoming meeting with Putin in the state of Alaska on August 15, calling it "a significant event in the bilateral relationship between the United States and Russia."
