Russian-Belarusian Exercises "Zapad-2025" Started

Poland responds by moving troops to its eastern borders.

The joint strategic exercise of the armed forces of Belarus and Russia "Zapad-2025" has started, the press service of the Defense Ministry said on September 12.

The exercise "is the final stage of joint training of the armed forces of the two countries in the current year," the Russian military department said.

In the first stage of the maneuvers, the military will work out the issues of controlling formations and military units "in repelling aggression against the 'allied state', organizing interaction and all kinds of support in the interests of fulfilling the tasks as intended."

"The main content of the second stage will be the management of troops and forces in restoring the territorial integrity of the 'allied state', defeating the enemy, including with the participation of a coalition group of troops (forces) of friendly states," the Russian military department said.

The practical actions of the troops will be held at training ranges on the territory of Belarus and Russia, as well as in the waters of the Baltic and Barents Seas.

Polish Deputy Minister of National Defense Cesarius Tomczyk said that in the coming days "there will be about 40 thousand soldiers on the Polish borders."

The maneuvers "West-2025" are scheduled for September 12-16 and will be the first since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The maneuvers will take place, in particular, in Grodno and Pravdinsk, near the Polish border.

"Let's remember that Zapad-2025 is an offensive exercise. They started the war in Ukraine, as well as the aggression against Georgia. In this regard, the Polish army has been preparing for it. "In the coming days we will have about 40,000 soldiers on the border," the Polish vice minister stressed.

Russia plans to use hypersonic Oreshnik missiles during the maneuvers and conduct a simulation of the use of nuclear weapons.

The Lithuanian Defense Ministry warns that the exercises may include testing the readiness of the Western Military District and the Baltic Fleet. "Given the shortage of soldiers and equipment, Russia could use its nuclear capabilities," said British think tank Chatham House.

The maneuvers will involve up to 30,000 soldiers, of which 6,000-8,000 will be deployed in Belarus.

Reminder, in connection with the "West-2025" exercise Poland indefinitely closed the border with Belarus. Checkpoints stopped working at 1.00 (Minsk time) on September 12.

Polish Minister of Interior and Administration Marcin Kerwiński specified that the border with Belarus will be closed not for the duration of the exercise "West," but in connection with them: "The term of border closure is indefinite. We will constantly analyze the situation."

The minister stressed that the Polish side did not intend to "keep the border closed even one day without necessity."
