British NATO Planes Began Patrolling The Skies Over Poland

The operation is a clear signal to Moscow.

British Eurofighter fighter jets have begun patrolling Polish skies as part of NATO's airspace defense mission following recent violations by Russia.

According to Reuters

The operation is a clear signal to Moscow that "NATO airspace will be protected," according to British Defense Secretary John Healey.

Two Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets of the British Royal Air Force took off from a military base in eastern England on Friday evening. They were patrolling Polish skies to deter and repel possible threats from Russia, including UAVs. Both aircraft successfully returned to the UK in the early hours of Saturday morning, September 20.

The British government stressed that the mission was in response to the "most significant violation" of NATO airspace by Russian President Vladimir Putin since the start of his illegal full-scale war in Ukraine.

The UK Air Force's readiness and mobility

The commander-in-chief of the British Air Force, Air Marshal Harve Smith, said British fighter jets were working alongside allies on NATO's eastern flank.

"We remain mobile, integrated and ready to project air power over distance," he said.

The British government also reiterated its intention to increase defense spending to 2.6 percent of GDP by April 2027, demonstrating its willingness to maintain Europe's security alongside the United States. U.S. President Donald Trump has previously criticized European countries for underfunding defense and over-reliance on the United States.

Rising tensions in Europe

The UK's mission over Poland comes amid heightened tensions elsewhere in Europe.

For example, NATO member Estonia reported on Friday, September 19, that three Russian warplanes violated its airspace within 12 minutes in an "unprecedentedly audacious" incident.

The British Defense Minister John Healey condemned the actions, noting that "Russia's latest reckless and dangerous activity was the third violation of NATO airspace in recent days."
