Syria Sets New Date For First Election Since Assad's Ouster

Parliamentary elections will be held in October.

In Syria, the People's Council (parliament) elections have been postponed. They were scheduled for September, but will now be held in October.

This is reported by SANA.

"Voting for members of the People's Assembly (parliament - ed.) will take place on October 5, 2025 in all constituencies," the Supreme Committee for Elections to the People's Assembly of Syria announced.

Also on Saturday, the committee extended the deadline for filing appeals against members of the electoral bodies until the end of Sunday, September 21.

Reminder that the voting was originally scheduled for September 15-20. However, this week the election committee said the election dates would be postponed.

The problem was logistical reasons. These included the lack of reliable civil records due to the fighting that has been in the country, as well as population displacement.

The electoral college vote is expected to elect 140 deputies, while another 70 will be appointed for the interim period by Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa.

The interim parliament's term is for 30 months, with the possibility of extension. This body will serve as a legislative body until the approval of a permanent constitution and the organization of new elections.

It should be noted that the People's Council of Syria was dissolved on January 29 by decree of the interim government.
