Politico: The Pentagon Is Outraged By The Department's Name Change

The U.S. Defense Department, which President Donald Trump the day before renamed the Department of War, is outraged by the rebranding.

This is according to Politico, citing unnamed current and former Pentagon officials.

On Friday, Sept. 5, Pentagon officials expressed frustration, anger and outright confusion over the renaming of the nation's Defense Department, which could cost billions of dollars for cosmetic changes that will do little to address the military's pressing problems, such as countering a more aggressive alliance of authoritarian states.

The details of the executive order signed by Trump on Friday are still unclear, but officials may have to replace Defense Department seals at more than 700,000 facilities in 40 countries and all 50 states.

The list includes letterhead for six military branches and dozens of other agencies, embossed napkins in dining rooms, embroidered jackets for Senate-confirmed officials, and key chains and souvenirs in the Pentagon store.

"This is strictly for a domestic political audience. Not only will it cost millions of dollars, but it will have absolutely no impact on China's or Russia's calculations. Worse, it will be used by our enemies to portray the United States as bellicose and a threat to international stability," the former official said.

The White House said in a news release that Trump's executive order authorizes Defense Secretary Pete Hagset to refer to himself as "Secretary of War" in all official communications and to recommend measures that would enforce the new title throughout the department.

It also specifies that the Department of War can serve as a secondary title, which would allow Hagset to implement the decision but help avoid regulatory changes.
