Is the U.S. preparing to stand up for the protesters?
US President Donald Trump has said that Americans should consider evacuating Iran. Mass protests erupted in that country in late December amid a deep economic crisis.
Trump announced earlier that he had canceled all meetings with Iranian authorities "until the senseless killing of protesters stops" and called on demonstrators to seize government offices. "Help is on the way! Let's make Iran great again!" - he declared. The American leader had previously not ruled out that the US would strike Iran amid protests in the country.
When asked by reporters what he meant by Truth Social's statement that "help is on the way," the Republican said, "Sorry, you'll have to find out for yourself."
The White House chief was also asked about the number of people killed in the Iran protests. He replied that he did not know the exact numbers. "We'll probably know within the next 24 hours. I think really a lot," he suggested.
The day before, the State Department urged Americans to leave Iran amid widespread protests, restrictions on internet access and disruptions to public transportation.
