The military has little time left to join the protesters.
The son of the last Shah of Iran, Reza Pahlavi, called on Iran's current armed forces to join the citizens' protest movement.
He posted a video message to this effect on January 13 on the X platform.
"You are the national army of Iran, not the army of the Islamic Republic. You are obliged to protect the lives of your compatriots," Pahlavi emphasized.
While urging to join the protesters, he added that the army men have little time.
To the protesters, he also left a message - keep fighting.
Widespread anti-government protests that erupted in late 2025 continue in Iran. They began in Tehran among businessmen dissatisfied with the economic situation and the fall of the national currency against the US dollar. The Iranian rial has lost nearly half its value against the dollar in 2025, and inflation reached 42.5% in December.
The protests were joined even by cities previously considered loyal to the current regime, such as Qom in central Iran and Mashhad in the northeast.
On January 10, the heir to the throne of the Pahlavi dynasty, Iran's crown prince Reza Pahlavi, who has lived in the United States since 1979, called on Iranians to move to a new level of confrontation - to gradually take over cities.
U.S. President Donald Trump said Washington was considering "very tough" options for dealing with Iran amid mass protests and the deaths of their participants. In particular, Trump did not rule out the use of military force.
On January 13, Reuters, citing an Iranian official, reported that about two thousand people, including members of the security forces, were killed during anti-government protests in Iran. In turn, Iran International, an Iranian opposition TV channel, claimed that at least 12,000 people had been killed.
On January 13, Trump on the social network Truth Social urged Iranians to continue protests and seize institutions in the country, saying that help for them "is on the way.".
