The U.S. is ready to act.
US President Donald Trump reacted to attempts by Iranian authorities to quell protests in that country, the largest since 2022.
"If Iran opens fire on peaceful protesters and brutally kills them, as is its custom, the United States of America will come to their aid. We are on full alert and ready to act," Trump wrote on his Truth Social network.

Now widespread anti-government protests are continuing in Iran, which erupted in late 2025. They began in Tehran among businessmen unhappy with the economic situation and the fall of the national currency against the US dollar. The Iranian rial has lost nearly half its value against the dollar in 2025, and inflation reached 42.5% in December. On Dec. 30, university students joined the protests, and the actions spread to other cities. Participants shouted slogans against Iran's spiritual leadership.
Moscow's worst nightmare continues to unfold in Iran as violent protests have now spread to over 50 cities, with demonstrators calling for the return of the royal family, now residing in the US.

As of January 1, 2026, at least seven people from four different cities in Iran were known dead, the Associated Press reported. Overall, the protests have spread across dozens of cities.
The protests were the largest since the 2022 riots sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini, a young woman accused by morality police of inappropriately wearing a hijab.
Iranian authorities have imposed heightened security measures in areas of Tehran where anti-government demonstrations began in late 2025. President Masoud Pezeshkian said the government was ready to listen to the "legitimate demands" of protesters. Attorney General Mohammad Movahedi-Azad warned that any attempts to destabilize the situation would receive a "decisive response."
The Reuters news agency notes that in recent years authorities in Iran have cracked down hard on waves of protests over high prices, drought, restrictions on women's rights and political freedoms, often using mass arrests.
The country's economy has been struggling for years due to U.S. and Western sanctions that were imposed in response to Tehran's nuclear program. Tensions in the country peaked in June 2025 during the 12-day war with Israel, further worsening the financial situation.
Violent protests continue to spread across Iran, now into its 5th day, with 27 cities now demonstrating against the Mullah regime.
