Russian UAVs regularly fly into the country.
The Romanian Ministry of National Defense is moving additional units and military equipment closer to the border with Ukraine. This was announced by the country's Defense Minister Radu Mirutse, Digi24.
He said the Romanian army is building up its troop strength in the Dobrudja region in the east of the country, which borders Ukraine. Russian drones are regularly detected in the area, periodically violating Romania's airspace and posing a security threat.
Russian UAVs flying over the Romanian-Ukrainian border have recently become more frequent, prompting Bucharest to decide to increase its military presence in the border areas. A significant number of Romanian servicemen have already been stationed in Dobrudzha, and their number may be increased in the future. Special attention is paid to strengthening air defense systems.
At the same time, the Romanian military admits that not all Russian drones are detected by radar. In some cases, drones fall near residential buildings. To counter such threats, the Romanian army uses German Gepard self-propelled air defense systems, similar to those used in Ukraine. In addition, Romania has other air defense equipment.
The last serious incident with a Russian drone on the territory of Romania, which is a NATO member country, occurred in mid-January 2026. Then one of the drones fell about 200 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. Since radar equipment did not detect it, the exact time of the drone's fall could not be established.
