Bulgaria's First Female President
Iliana Jotova

The country's Constitutional Court handed over power to Iliana Jotova.

Bulgaria's Constitutional Court, following the voluntary resignation of Rumen Radev, has officially handed over presidential powers to Iliana Yotova.

This was reported on Friday, January 23, by Nova.bg.

At 16:00 Rumen Radev solemnly left the presidential residence through the ceremonial entrance, and from that time his powers automatically passed to Iliana Jotova. She became the first female head of state in Bulgaria's history. As the publication notes, Yotova also became the first female Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the country's Armed Forces.

Iliana Yotova's career began with journalism. Then she joined the Bulgarian Socialist Party and was a member of the European Parliament from this political force. Since 2017, Yotova has been permanent vice president under President Rumen Radev.

She herself will not have an official deputy, and according to procedure, Yotova will not need to take the oath of office in parliament - as she already did so in 2021.
