French Military Boarded Russian Shadow Navy Tanker

A video of the operation has surfaced.

The footage was given to journalists by the French Armed Forces, the LCI television channel reported. The clip shows the vessel Emmanuel Macron said everything was done in accordance with the law and international conventions.

The detention took place on January 22 in the Alboran Sea - in the western Mediterranean Sea, near the Strait of Gibraltar. The operation was carried out under Article 110 of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and aimed to verify the true identity of the vessel, as it was suspected of using a false flag.

The tanker was traveling under the flag of the Comoros Islands, under which it was also shown on maritime tracking websites. The tanker regularly delivered oil to ports in China and India. In the British list of tankers in Russia's shadow fleet, it is known as Grinch, and in European and American lists as Carl.
