New details of the U.S. special operation.
The carefree behavior of Venezuela's US-captured dictator Nicolas Maduro, particularly his dancing on television amid strained relations with Washington, was one of the factors that prompted the administration of US President Donald Trump to launch a special operation in Caracas.
This was reported by The New York Times, citing sources familiar with White House discussions.
According to the publication, it was Maduro's public appearances and his demonstrative calm during the escalation with Washington that convinced Donald Trump's team that the Venezuelan dictator was ignoring US signals. We are talking, in particular, about another US strike on a Venezuelan ship, which Washington linked to drug trafficking. Despite this, Maduro has continued his public appearances, including dancing on state television.
As the newspaper notes, he was back on the air this week reacting to another escalation - a strike on a pier that the U.S. considers a facility involved in the illegal drug trade. During the broadcast, Maduro danced to electronic music while a voiceover in English repeated the phrase, "No crazy war."
The NYT's sources say that in this way Maduro was allegedly checking to see if Trump's threats were a bluff. In Washington, however, such behavior was seen as a mockery of the United States, which was one of the reasons for the decision to carry out a special operation in the Venezuelan capital.
