Ukraine has commented on the seizure of a sub-sanctioned tanker.
The seizure by the United States of the sub-sanctioned tanker Marinera under the Russian flag may become a precedent. This was stated in Facebook Ukrainian Presidential Commissioner for Sanctions Policy Vladyslav Vlasiuk.
"The seizure by the U.S. military of the Marinera/Bella 1 'shadow fleet' tanker, which suddenly became Russian-flagged, could become an extremely useful precedent for enforcing the implementation of sanctions. [...] Very good. We need more," he wrote.
Vlasyuk noted that the sub-sanctioned tankers of Russia's "shadow fleet" have "one kitchen," he described it using the example of the captured tanker: "It came out of Iran, carried oil from Venezuela, became under the flag of the Russian Federation."
The US military captured the tanker Marinera on January 7 in the Atlantic Ocean near Iceland. Russian ships, which were nearby at the time, did not interfere with the Americans' special operation.
Commenting on the special operation on social network X, the U.S. Army Europe Command noted that "this seizure supports U.S. President Donald Trump's call against sanctioned vessels that threaten the security and stability of the Western Hemisphere."
