The head of U.S. national intelligence will oversee AI-related matters.
U.S. Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton will become the “AI czar” in President Donald Trump’s administration. He will lead a new White House task force that will address issues related to the development of artificial intelligence, according to The Wall Street Journal.
“The president asked us to assemble a group that would ensure exactly what he was talking about: that we remain leaders in the field of superintelligence and that the interests of the American people come first,” Clayton noted.
According to the publication’s sources, the AI industry itself will continue to carry out the bulk of the risk management work, but the working group will collaborate with industry representatives to identify risks and opportunities.
““I expect that mechanisms will be developed through dialogue—just as happens in other industries,” Clayton told the WSJ, adding that the working group will analyze existing legislation and discuss possible measures that Congress could take.
According to CNBC, the new body, led by the “AI czar,” will be called the “Super Intelligence Force” (SI). It will have 120 days to study the risks and opportunities of artificial intelligence and prepare recommendations on the federal government’s role in this area.
Clayton heads U.S. national intelligence, which comprises 18 agencies, and serves as the president’s chief intelligence adviser. During his confirmation hearings in July, he stated that artificial intelligence presents both an opportunity and a threat to the intelligence community.
