In Russia, The Creator Of “Masya” Was Sentenced In Absentia To A Penal Colony
Oleg Kuvaev

Oleg Kuvayev was sentenced to four years.

In Russia, the Nevsky District Court of St. Petersburg sentenced Oleg Kuvaev , the creator of the animated series “Masya,” in absentia to 4 years and 1 month in a general-regime penal colony for one of the episodes of the cartoon. This was reported on Monday, October 5, by the Joint Press Service of the St. Petersburg Courts.

According to the press release, the basis for the prosecution was a video posted on YouTube titled “Masya. Episode 169. Idoliada.” “The video in question contains public calls to servicemembers of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation to surrender, desert, and disobey orders from military superiors, as well as promotion of the project ‘I Want to Live’ — the ‘Unified Center for Appeals from Servicemen of the Russian Federation Regarding Surrender,’ created with the support of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense,” the statement reads.

The content creator was also accused of ignoring the Russian authorities’ requirements for so-called “foreign agents” and failing to submit reports on his activities to the Ministry of Justice. In addition to the in absentia sentence, Kuvayev was banned from publishing material online for four years. The court did not specify how compliance with this ban would be monitored.

In December 2023, the Russian Ministry of Justice designated Oleg Kuvayev a “foreign agent” due to his criticism of Russia’s war against Ukraine. Shortly after Russian troops invaded the neighboring country, the animator released several anti-war episodes of “Masya.”
