The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner has retired from the Argentine national team.
Eight-time "Golden Ball" winner Lionel Messi has announced that he is ending his career with the Argentine national team on good terms and with gratitude, according to a post by Adidas Football on the social media platform X.
“The time has come. I’m leaving on good terms, having done everything I could. This jersey was my dream. My pride. My life. Thank you for loving me so much. I’ll miss it,” said Messi.
Messi is ending his career with the national team, for which he has played since 2005. His final match for the Argentine national team will be against Benin on the night of October 7 (2:00 a.m. Minsk time) at the “Monumental Antonio Vespucio Liberty” Stadium in Buenos Aires.
As a member of the Argentine national team, he won the 2022 World Cup, became a two-time Copa América champion (2021, 2024), and claimed numerous other trophies.
Messi holds the record with eight Ballon d’Or awards; he was named FIFA World Player of the Year three times, has won the “Golden Boot” as the top scorer in European championships six times, and has received the World Cup “Golden Ball” twice.
