The Grand Prix will take place in Rwanda.

Rwanda is close to hosting a Formula 1 race and bringing the world championship back to Africa for the first time since 1993. Negotiations between the country’s authorities and Formula 1 representatives are ongoing, and an official announcement is expected shortly, according to The Independent.

Plans call for a permanent circuit to be built approximately 40 kilometers from the capital, Kigali. According to preliminary data, the race may not appear on the calendar until 2030.

The last African Formula 1 race took place in 1993 at the Kyalami Circuit near Johannesburg. Currently, South Africa, Morocco, and Nigeria are also vying to host the race. In South Africa, officials are considering a return to Kyalami as well as the option of a street circuit in Cape Town.

Rwanda announced its plans to host a Grand Prix in 2024 during the FIA awards ceremony. The country’s president, Paul Kagame, stated at the time his intention to submit a bid.

The initiative is also supported by seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton. He said he has been trying for several years to convince Formula 1 officials to bring the championship back to Africa.
“Why aren’t we in Africa? Every other continent has a race—why not Africa?” said the British driver.
Hamilton also called Rwanda “a particularly stunning place” and admitted that he could imagine living there.

For Formula 1, a return to the continent would be not only a sporting event but also an important step in expanding the championship’s global reach.
