The military had to open fire and use tear gas.
Latvian troops were forced to open fire to stop migrants breaking through from Belarus, reported the Latvian Army on the morning of July 22. Tear gas was also used.
Over the past 24 hours, Latvian soldiers have detected five people attempting to cross illegally from Belarus.
“When they noticed the soldiers, they acted aggressively and threw sticks at them. The soldiers responded by using tear gas to stop the illegal actions and prevent the situation from escalating further. Since the individuals continued to ignore lawful orders and persisted in their aggressive behavior, a single warning shot was fired into the air, after which they retreated back into Belarusian territory,” the Latvian Army reported.
It should be noted that the trend of numerous attempts by migrants to break through from Belarus into Latvia has been ongoing for several years now.
