A Referendum On EU Accession Has Begun In Iceland

The country applied for membership in the European Union in 2009.

Early voting has begun in Iceland for a referendum on resuming negotiations for the country's accession to the European Union (EU). This was reported by the newspaper Le Figaro.

During the vote, citizens will be asked to answer the question: “Should Iceland resume negotiations on joining the EU?” The main part of the referendum will take place on August 29.

Iceland applied for EU membership in 2009. However, negotiations officially ceased in 2015. The country is currently a member of the European Economic Area and the Schengen Area.

In February, Politico reported that Icelandic authorities were considering the possibility of restarting the EU accession process earlier than planned due to rising geopolitical tensions. Initially, the ruling party planned to resume the process by 2027, but against the backdrop of U.S. President Donald Trump’s claims to Greenland and the imposition of tariffs, the authorities are now considering moving the referendum to August of this year.
