"Perfectly Counterfeit" Dollars Have Appeared In Belarus

A "luxury-class" counterfeit item was discovered in Vitebsk.

A resident of the regional capital brought a “perfect counterfeit” to one of the banks in Vitebsk, as reported by the State Committee for Forensic Expertise (SCFE).

The woman attempted to exchange the counterfeit bill at a currency exchange office. An employee of the financial institution suspected the bill was fake and called the police. The bill was seized and sent for examination.

Experts confirmed that the bill was counterfeit. It was produced using equipment capable of applying an image via intaglio printing (metallography). As noted by the State Committee for Economic Security, this is “the most complex technology used by state mints,” in which “ink is transferred under high pressure from special metal plates—clichés—onto paper, forming a relief that can be felt with the fingers.”

“Despite the flawless execution of the counterfeit, the expert equipment and professional knowledge of the forensic experts left the criminals no chance,” the GKSE noted.
