The U.S. Is Beginning The Final Stage Of Assembly For The Powerful B61-13 Nuclear Bombs

The Pantex facility in Texas has begun the final stage of assembling the latest B61-13 thermonuclear bombs, according to the U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA).

In early September, the Y-12 facility in Tennessee completed the manufacture of key components for these weapons. Now, the final integration of all components is taking place at the Pantex plant, after which the finished bombs will be delivered to the Pentagon.

Development of the B61-13 variant began last year as part of the nuclear arsenal modernization program. The new bombs, with variable yields (ranging from 10 to 360 kilotons), are intended to replace the obsolete B61-7 warheads. In the future, these bombs will be integrated into the weapon systems of B-2 Spirit strategic bombers and the upcoming B-21 Raider.

Representatives of the U.S. Department of Defense emphasize that the deployment of the B61-13 will not result in an increase in the total number of nuclear bombs in the country, as the new units are merely replacing older models being phased out of service.

Experts from the Federation of American Scientists believe that production of the B61-13 will be relatively small—about 50 units. According to their estimates, this is due to the limited number of potential targets that require such a high yield.
