A 105-year-old Guard At A Soviet Prisoner-of-war Camp Is Under Investigation In Germany

A 105-year-old German man is under investigation on suspicion of complicity in war crimes during World War II. This was reported by The Guardian citing the Dortmund prosecutor’s office.

“The 105-year-old suspect is believed to have been a guard at the Stalag 326 VI K prisoner-of-war camp,” representatives of the prosecutor’s office stated. According to them, the man is accused of “complicity in numerous murders” of prisoners of war “in connection with his work” at the camp. Reportedly, between 180,000 and 200,000 Soviet prisoners of war were held at the camp from 1941 through April 1945.

Observers note a marked intensification of efforts by judicial authorities to identify and bring to justice alleged accomplices of the Nazi extermination machine before they die. This, in turn, is an acknowledgment that many of these suspects—who were left untouched for 80 years after the end of the war due to their apparent insignificance—actually played a key role in carrying out the goals of the Nazi regime.

Prosecutors have not disclosed the suspect’s name or indicated when the investigation will conclude and the case will be referred to court.
