Russia Sent A Confidential Diplomatic Note To NATO

For the first time since the start of the Cold War.

Russia sent NATO a confidential message through diplomatic channels warning that it is prepared to use nuclear weapons if the alliance attempts to block the Kaliningrad region, according to Reuters. In the document, which the agency reviewed, Moscow accused the alliance of pursuing a “dangerous and reckless course”, which carries a “high risk of triggering a direct armed conflict.” The document also emphasizes that in the event of a military clash, Russia would immediately launch strikes “against decision-making centers in the alliance’s member countries.”

“This is the first time since the Cold War that Russia has threatened us in this way. So this is serious,” a high-ranking representative of the defense ministry of one of the European countries told Reuters. A NATO source called the message “yet another attempt by Russia to intimidate Europeans,” adding that the response would be “firm” and that the alliance would not withdraw its continued support for Ukraine.

NATO spokesperson Allison Hart confirmed receipt of the Russian note. “We sent a response in which we noted that NATO is a defensive alliance and none of our actions or exercises pose a threat to any part of Russia. We strongly condemn the threat of force, including any irresponsible nuclear rhetoric,” she said.

After the document was sent to NATO headquarters, Russian embassies in several European countries publicly accused the alliance of escalating tensions around the Kaliningrad region through military exercises. The statements noted that Russia has no intention of attacking NATO countries, but any aggression against Kaliningrad will be met with the harshest possible response.

Earlier, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko accused Europe of allegedly rehearsing scenarios for a naval blockade and the seizure of the Kaliningrad region during the Joint Expeditionary Forces exercises led by London. Russian Presidential Aide Nikolai Patrushev also stated that NATO countries are preparing to seize Kaliningrad and warned of an “immediate and crushing” response to any military aggression against the region. In June, Vladimir Putin promised to defend Kaliningrad with “all of Russia’s capabilities,” noting that the Baltic Fleet should be the first line of defense against a potential attack on the region.
