Justice Ministry frightened by Helsinki Committee appealing to UN

19

Belarus’ Justice Ministry demanded from Belarusian Helsinki Committee (BHC) the text of its UN appeal, as BHC’s chairperson Oleg Gulak told Interfax-Zapad.

“The Justice Ministry demanded from BHC to within one hour submit our appeal to the UN that contains comments on the Ministry’s decision regarding a range of Belarusian lawyers”, Gulak said.

Later on, BHC chairperson told the information agency that he has “just sent the UN appeal text to the Justice Ministry.”

A copy of the document submitted to the Justice Ministry by BHC has recently appeared in social networks. In particular, the following is stated in the document: “The Ministry of Justice has found out that BHC had sent comments to the UN under titles “On violations of lawyers’ legislation” and “Justice Ministry panel evaluated the actions of the lawyers who have violated the legislation” which were published on the Ministry’s official webpage. This fact was acknowledged on 12 January 2011 by BHC head.”

“In compliance with article 24 of the Law “On public associations”, we recommend that you within one hour submit the above mentioned comment via fax or e-mail”, the Justice Ministry wrote.
