Tomasz Pisula: “Lukashenka goes into a conflict with Poland again”

The head of the Polish foundation “Freedom and Democracy” is sure, that it is pointless to negotiate with the Belarusian dictator – he will cheat anyway.

For charter97.org Tomasz Pisula commented on Aliaksandr Lukashenka’s statements during his parliamentary elections voting in Minsk. Commenting on some international observers’ statements, particularly the Polish ones, regarding the undemocratic character of the Belarusian elections, he noted: “Tell your Polish observers to learn from us how to hold elections and do at Rome as the Romans do”. “We will figure out without any Polish politicians’ help how to build our own life”, - Lukashenka said.

“Firstly, this is Poland, a democratic country, not Belarus, and the Poles know better how to hold free elections. We haven’t had problems with that since 1989, - the head of the “Freedom and Democracy” foundation stated”. – Secondly, it seems to me, that Lukashenka is going into conflict with the Poles once again. Andrzej Paczobut is under a constant threat of an arrest, the oppositional union of the Poles is persecuted. Recently the Polish consul in Grodno Chadkevicz has had a meeting with the official union of the Poles. It seemed to me that through this consul Poland wanted to show Lukashenka that there is a willingness to negotiate, but, judging from the recent statements, he rejects a dialogue. But it’s even good, because we must not negotiate with w dictator. This is a silly idea. He will never keep his promises. One must not talk to Lukashenka and there is nothing to talk about. It is important for the Polish MFA not to forget about the Poles in Belarus”.
