Protests in Mahilou against Russian airbase

30

Mikalai Hladyshau from Mahilou pickets the Mahilou city executive committee protesting against opening a Russian airbase in Belarus.

He had the poster “No to Russian airbase in Belarus”, Radio Svaboda reports.

The Mahilou resident decided to express his discontent with the government's plans to open a Russian airbase in the country. He said all Russian airbases had been closed in Eastern Europe after the collapse of the Soviet Union. He hopes time will come when Russian military bases will be closed on Belarus.

Mikalai Hladyshau supports the United Civil Party.

The picket lasts 1.5 hours. The activist was detained by the police.

Information about opening a new military base in Belarus appeared on April 23. The announcement was made by Russia's defence minister Sergei Shoigu at a meeting with Lukashenka. The Russian military base will be opened in Lida this year.
