As long as the dictator has underlined so many times that Statkevich could not be a political competitor for him, it is most likely that in reality the situation is just the opposite.
Such an opinion has been expressed to charter97.org by the wife of the former presidential candidate Mikalai Statkevich, Maryna Adamovich. At today’s press-conference Lukashenka has repeated several times that Statkevich is not a politician to him, and even swore by his children. The wife of the political prisoner said that there is nothing to discuss.
“I do not follow his speeches. Only journalists update me on that when they ask such questions. I do not want to discuss that in much detail. I can say one thing: in order to look for a hidden meaning in such statements, special education is needed. So it’s none of my business.
The only thing I could say is that if so many words have been said, and so many times it has been stressed that Mikalai is not a competitor for him, it could be a matter of great concern to him, and he cannot sleep at night because of it, he is frightened by it and his feeble heart is being pierced by it,” the wife of the political prisoner said.
In May 2011 the court of Leninski district of Minsk sentenced Statkevich to 6 years of imprisonment on charges of organising riots following the day of the presidential elections on December 19, 2010. He began to serve his term in correctional facility No. 17 in Shklou, but confinement conditions for him were toughened in January 2012. Statkevich was transferred to prison No. 4 in Mahilou for three years. He returned to correctional facility No. 17 in Shklou on January 12.
The 58-year-old Mikalai Statkevich is the only presidential candidate in Belarus, who is still kept behind the bars.
