Opposition forces should support political prisoner Mikalai Statkevich as a single candidate of the democratic opposition.
Uladzimir Niakliaeu made this proposal in Belorusskie Novosti newspaper.
The central committee of the Belarusian Social Democratic Party (Hramada), a part of the coalition People's Referendum, hasn't taken a decision to support a prospective candidate for the presidential elections who would represent the coalition, Uladzimir Niakliaeu writes.
“I propose that all prospective candidate withdraw and all opposition forces support political prisoner Mikalai Statkevich as a single candidate of the democratic opposition before the start of the registration of initiative groups. This is the only reasonable decision both politically and morally. This decision can save the opposition,” Uladzimir Niakliaeu writes.
The politician thinks if the prospective candidates don't withdraw and if the opposition does not propose a single candidate, it will choose a path of falsifications and deliberate deception of voters.
“I am against it. I quit the opposition, but it does not mean I want it to disappear. I do not want it at least because it is unfair to opposition activists and people far from behind-the-scene games who sincerely struggle for the free democratic future of Belarus. Leaders of opposition forces do not have the right to drag these people into falsifications and deception.
The decision to change the scenario of the opposition's participation in the presidential elections should be taken immediately, just after the election date is announced officially. It's late to use other tools,” Uladzimir Niakliaeu writes.
