Linas Linkevičius: Violation Of Airspace Did Not Pose Threat To Belarus
Linas Linkevičius

The plane, which flew from Lithuania and violated the airspace of Belarus last week, did not create a threat.

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkevičius has reacted in such a way to Minsk's warning that Belarus can be forced to use military means if its airspace is violated again, delfi.lt writes.

"Obviously, what we are talking about is related to a civilian plane, and this really could not pose a threat to anyone. However, it absolutely does not justify the violations of airspace, if they do take place," – the minister told journalists on Monday.

He stressed that the Lithuanian diplomats would respond to the note on the violation of airspace, handed over by the Belarusians. Linkevičius noted that the incident would be thoroughly investigated into.

The management of the state air traffic control company Oro navigacija and the Administration of Civil Aviation reported on Monday that last Wednesday, Belarus’ airspace was violated by a light aircraft P 46 T, which got off the ground at the Vilnius airport, manned by a citizen of Denmark.

Oro navigacija Interim Director General Mindaugas Gustis informed that the P 46 T plane flew from Vilnius on a scheduled route, it was supposed to fly to the Belarusian border and return back. Belarusian officials recorded the violation on April 19, at 13.40 local and Lithuanian time.

The plane went deep into the Belarusian territory for eight kilometers, and after three minutes turned round and left the airspace of the country. Deputy director of the Civil Aviation Administration Alvydas Shumskas reported that the P 46 T plane was piloted by a citizen of Denmark. He was accompanied by a Lithuanian, who was planning to buy the plane.

On Sunday, Air Force Commander of the Republic of Belarus Aleh Dzvihaliou said that the plane flying from Lithuania violated the airspace near Astravets, where the nuclear power plant is being built.

"If such cases happen again, the air defense forces will have to use force measures," – the officer said.
