Terrorist Attack In Minsk Metro Committed Eight Years Ago

The court and the investigation have failed to convince the Belarusians that the really guilty ones were punished.

April 11 marks eight years since the explosion at the Kastrychnitskaya station of the Minsk Metro.

The terrorist attack that took place on April 11, 2011 at 17.56 killed 15 people, 315 suffered injuries, 32 people received serious injuries.

It has already become a tradition on this mourning day to bring flowers to the River of Memory memorial sign at the exit from the Metro at Kastrychnitskaya.

A day after the attack, in the evening of April 12, the suspects, 25-year-old Vitsebsk-born Dzmitry Kanavalau and Uladzislau Kavaliou, were detained. They were accused not only of committing the terrorist attack in the Metro, but also of explosions in Vitsebsk in the fall of 2005 and in Minsk on July 4, 2008.

The criminal case of a terrorist attack in the Metro was considered by the Supreme Court. The two defendants were sentenced to death. However, the court and the investigation failed to convince the Belarusians that the really guilty ones were punished. According to one of the versions, the security services of Belarus could be involved in the terrorist attack in the Minsk Metro: four people in civilian clothes could be seen on the video of the BelTA agency, made immediately after the explosion in the Minsk Metro.
