Today Is Independence Day In Belarus

On July 27, the Supreme Soviet adopted the Declaration of State Sovereignty.

On July 27, 1990, the Supreme Soviet of the BSSR adopted the Declaration of State Sovereignty. This document became the first official step towards restoring the independence of our country.

The Declaration proclaimed "full state sovereignty of the Republic of Belarus as the supremacy, independence and completeness of the state power of the Republic within its territory, the competence of its laws, and the independence of the Republic in its external relations".

One year later, on August 25, 1991, the document received the status of the constitutional law, on the basis of which amendments and additions to the Constitution of 1978 were made.

The official authorities cancelled the holiday after the "referendum" of 1996, which gave Lukashenka unlimited powers. Belarus began celebrating Independence Day on the anniversary of Minsk's liberation from the Nazi invaders on July 3. The democratic community continues to celebrate Independence Day on July 27.

Happy holiday, friends!
