Poland, Baltic States Call On EU To Build Defence Line On Border With Belarus

The proposal will be discussed at a summit in Brussels today.

On June 26, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia called on the European Union to build a defence line along the bloc's border with Russia and Belarus to protect the EU from military threats, Reuters reported.

In a letter to the EU chief, which will be discussed at a summit in Brussels on June 27, the leaders of the four countries that share borders with Russia and Belarus said the project would require financial support from all EU members.

"The building of a system of defence infrastructure along the EU's external border with Russia and Belarus will respond to the acute and urgent need to secure the EU against military and hybrid threats," the letter reads.

By hybrid, the authors of the letter mean a combination of military and non-military threats, along with disinformation, cyberattacks, economic pressure and attempts to create a migration crisis at the border.

Some EU diplomats have estimated the cost of building such a defensive line along the EU's 700-kilometre border with Russia and Belarus at about 2.5 billion euros ($2.67 billion).
