Forbes: Russian Airborne Forces Elite Brigade Defeated In Vovchansk

The trapped occupants will not last long.

The Russian troops' offensive in Kharkiv region may have been aimed at capturing a wide and deep strip of territory to bring heavy artillery closer to the city of Kharkiv. Russian commanders may have hoped to reach Kharkiv itself.

This is reported by Forbes.

However, this did not happen. A couple of weeks after the offensive began, 30,000 Russian troops bogged down in the town of Vovchansk. Ukrainian defenders reportedly defeated an elite Russian airborne brigade in the town.

It is noted that many Russian invaders have refused to fight. If confirmed, it would be a heavy loss for the new northern grouping of Russian troops, which includes about seven regiments and brigades.

And Russian losses in Vovchansk could get even worse, as the surviving members of an entire battalion - that's hundreds of soldiers - have been trapped in a chemical plant in the centre of the town for two weeks.

And the soldiers may not last long. The Ukrainian Air Force has been bombing the chemical plant, gradually turning it into ruins.

The 83rd Airborne Brigade is or was an elite group - one of a dozen or so brigade formations in the 40,000-strong pre-war Airborne Corps. Back in 2019, the brigade practised parachuting in combat with its light armoured vehicles.

While in Ukraine, the 83rd Airborne Brigade abandoned parachutes and was fighting as a mechanised unit on its tracked BMDs and wheeled APCs.

Redeploying hundreds of kilometres at a time in response to Ukrainian attacks and opportunities for Russian attacks, the brigade was fighting in the south of the country in 2023 and this spring participated in the Russian siege of the eastern town of Chasiv Yar.
