Belarusians Bring Money To Banks Less Often

The National Bank has scared the population with a warning about devaluation.

The growth rate of ruble deposits in Belarus is slowing down. People are also bringing foreign currency to banks less and less often. This follows from the statistical bulletin of the National Bank.

Since the beginning of the year, the total amount of ruble deposits in Belarusian banks has increased by 12.2% — to 8.99 billion rubles as of June 1. But in recent months, a slowdown in growth has been seen: if in April the total amount of funds on deposits increased by 2.2%, then in May — by 1.8%.

At the same time, foreign currency deposits continue to decrease. If on January 1 they were equivalent to 9.44 billion rubles, then on June 1 — already 8.86 billion.

Economists previously pointed out the atypical behavior of Belarusians for people who, judging by statistics, are getting richer. Previously, during periods of income growth, our fellow citizens sought to accumulate currency and did not take out many loans (unless this promised benefits from the devaluation of the national currency). Now, however, people are actively spending their growing earnings.
