Hackers Break Into Mailboxes Of Russian Armed Forces Officers

They found a lot of interesting information there.

Ukrainian hackers from the “Cyber Resistance” team broke into the mailboxes of employees of the military educational center (MEC) at the Bauman Moscow State Technical University (MSTU), Lieutenant Colonel Alexey Zakrutny and Lieutenant Colonel Vladimir Potapov. Volunteers of the international intelligence community InformNapalm analyzed and published some of the documents from their correspondence.

It is reported that in the ranking of Russian educational institutions, MSTU is the leader in the number of foreign teachers and scientists it attracts. As for the MEC, it is not just a military department, but an entire faculty within the university with a specific profile. The university trains “elite” Russian military personnel, in particular for service in the Air Defense units and the Strategic Missile Forces.

The article states that the MEC does not accept students who have received the third category of professional and psychological suitability from the military registration and enlistment office. In addition, a student himself or his relatives must not have citizenship other than Russian. All educational programs require students to have access to state secrets.

The authors of the article pointed out that cadets are ideologically prepared exclusively for war against NATO. The basis of their training is the study of the weapons of the countries of the North Atlantic Alliance. At the same time, the teachers do not touch on the topic of, for example, China's strategic weapons.

The aforementioned lieutenant colonels Alexey Zakrutny and Vladimir Potapov work at the Anti-Aircraft Missile Troops Department — one of the 8 departments of the MEC MSTU. Hackers received non-public photographs of officers in a work environment, as well as photos of their documents.

The documents from the lieutenant colonels' boxes contain a list of 115 “Baumanka” graduates of 2019 and 2020, whose education was paid for by the Russian Ministry of Defense, as well as the exact places of service of graduates of the MEC Anti-Aircraft Missile Troops Department. Most serve in air defense units covering Moscow and the Moscow Region, the Baltic and Northern Fleets.

Both Alexey Zakrutny and Vladimir Potapov are engaged in scientific work in the field of improving the use of weapons of the Russian Armed Forces. For example, hackers found a manual for using the Pantsir-S SAM system marked “For official use only” by Vladimir Potapov. In Alexey Zakrutny's mail, instructions for the Tor-M1 SAM system were also found.

The hackers also found out that Vladimir Potapov is a veteran of the military operations in Syria. This is confirmed by his order made in October 2022 on the planki.ru website, where among the awards it is indicated “Participant in the military operation in Syria”. In addition, the Russian Lieutenant Colonel's email contains a sample request for a 10-day mission to Khmeim, where one of the Russian air bases in Syria is located. The authors of the publication believe that Vladimir Potapov could have been busy patching holes in the air defense of the Russian air base in Khmeim.

To sum up, the intelligence community noted that the West still has theses that science is outside of politics, and scientific cooperation has no boundaries. However, the listed data indicate that the allegedly civilian Russian university is directly involved in the war that Russia is waging abroad.
