Fifteen unidentified drones were accidentally spotted over a military base in Belgium's Elsenborn on October 3 while testing surveillance equipment. The base is located a few kilometers from the German border.
The drone incident in Belgium occurred around 1:45 a.m., Flemish public broadcaster VRT reported Oct. 3. The office of Belgian Defense Minister Theo Franken confirmed that unknown drones flew over the base in Ezlsenborn. The military has launched an investigation into the incident.
The military base in Elsenborn covers an area of 28 square meters and is used as a training camp. Small arms exercises are held in a protected area of the base.
Media military correspondent Jens Fransen said the base was testing a drone detection system at the time of the incident.
"The system was able to detect the drones. They are believed to have flown from Belgium across the border into Germany. They were also seen there by police in the small town of Duren," the correspondent said.
It is not yet known where the UAVs were launched from or for what purpose. Investigation into the incident is ongoing.
