Steve Whitkoff

They call him a traitor.

US congressional representatives, politicians and officials reacted to Bloomberg's publication regarding the conversation between the US president's special envoy Steve Whitkoff and the Russian dictator's aide Yuri Ushakov. Specifically, Republican Don Bacon said that Whitkoff can no longer be "trusted" to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine.

"For those who oppose the Russian invasion and want to see Ukraine become a sovereign and democratic country, it is clear that Whitkoff is in full support of the Russians. He cannot be trusted to lead these negotiations. Or would a Russian paid agent have done less than he did? He should be fired," the U.S. House member wrote on social media X.

Republican Brian Fitzpatrick said Whitkoff's assistance to the Russians was a "serious problem" and called for an end to "sideshows and secret meetings."

"This is a serious problem. And one of the many reasons why these pointless side shows and secret meetings must stop. Let Secretary of State Mark Rubio do his job honestly and objectively," Fitzpatrick wrote.

Democratic House member Ted Lieu believes Trump's special envoy "should be working for the U.S., not Russia" and called him a "real traitor."

Bloomberg previously published two transcripts of conversations - one from Oct. 14 between U.S. presidential envoy Steve Whitkoff and Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov, and a second from Oct. 29 between Putin's special envoy Kirill Dmitriev and Yuri Ushakov.

The conversation between Ushakov and Whitkoff lasted just over five minutes, according to Bloomberg. During it, Trump's envoy gave Vladimir Putin's aide advice on how the Russian ruler should discuss a peace settlement with his American counterpart. In particular, it was about organizing a phone conversation between the Russian and US presidents before the visit of Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky to the White House.
