Russia Closes Poland's Last Consulate In The Country

It is located in Irkutsk.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has announced the closure of the Polish Consulate General in Irkutsk. A note to this effect was handed to the Polish Ambassador today. The Russian authorities called the measure a response to the withdrawal by the Polish authorities of consent to the operation of the Russian Consulate General in Gdansk.

The Polish Consulate General in Irkutsk remained the last functioning Polish consular office in Russia. Similarly, the Russian consulate in Gdansk was the last Russian consular representation in Poland. As a result, only the Polish embassy in Moscow will remain in Russia and the Russian embassy in Warsaw will remain in Poland.

On November 19, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslav Sikorski announced Warsaw's decision to close the Russian consulate general in Gdansk as a response to the sabotage on the railroad, which authorities linked to the activities of Russian intelligence services. Gdansk became the third Russian consulate closed by Poland over the past year and a half: earlier, the representative offices in Krakow and Poznan ceased operations. After that, Russians could receive consular services only in Warsaw - in fact, the Gdansk consulate had already redirected those applying to the consular section of the embassy.
