It's a dangerous move.
While the Dawn over Neman party, part of the ruling coalition in Lithuania, is hinting at the need for talks with Belarus at the diplomatic level, former Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonīte says she is not surprised by the wishes of her coalition partners, Delfi.lt reported.
But negotiating with the Minsk regime led by Alexander Lukashenko is a dangerous step, as this is what the undemocratically elected ruler is striving for, she said.
"It is not surprising that this is coming from these particular coalition partners, because these coalition partners believe that one should be friends with all kinds of aggressors, dictators (...). This is a very dangerous way in the sense that this is what Lukashenko is striving for," Ingrida Šimonīte commented on the situation on November 28 in Žinių radijas.
"Foreign Minister Kiastutis Budrys himself said it extremely clearly. After all, after the rigged and stolen 2020 elections, we ourselves understand what the legitimacy of the regime is. Lukashenko is not the kind of person who would be very pleased that no one considers him a tsar and does not officially recognize him," added Shimonite.
In connection with the continued launch of smuggled weather probes from Belarus, the leader of the party "Zarya nad Neman," Remigijus Zemaitaitaitis has repeatedly stated the need for negotiations with Minsk at the political level.
