Babariko And Kolesnikova Asked The Lithuanian Prime Minister To "join The U.S. Effort"

Today Washington officially lifted sanctions on Belarusian potash.

Ex-political prisoners Viktor Babariko and Maria Kolesnikova spoke by phone with Lithuanian Prime Minister Inga Ruginenė. This was reported by the Babarico team.

"Viktor and Maria thanked the prime minister for his support, and also noted that they will definitely come for a visit as soon as the opportunity arises. They outlined that it is important to give a chance to U.S. diplomatic efforts, including the release of political prisoners and reducing tensions between our countries, in order to avoid new security risks. They said it is crucial that the European Union and Lithuania join the U.S. efforts and not miss the window of opportunity that has opened"," the team reported.

As Charter97.org reported, the U.S. lifted sanctions on Belarusian potash in exchange for the release of some Belarusian political prisoners.

Today, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kestutis Budrys said that Vilnius does not plan to let Belarusian potash through its ports. He also expressed hope that Latvia and Poland would adhere to such a position with regard to the import of Belarusian potash through their ports.

Lithuania introduced a ban on the transportation of Belarusian potash fertilizers from February 1, 2022. Prior to that, on average, about 11 million tons of Belarusian potash was transported by rail through the Lithuanian territory per year.
